It was with deep regret that we announced yesterday evening, the cancellation of racing on Sunday 25th May at the 2025 National Schools’ Regatta.
This decision was taken after significant consideration, discussion, and close monitoring of weather forecasts over a two-week period leading up to the event. Over the final ten days - and most closely during the last 72 hours - the Regatta Committee tracked weather patterns and wind forecasts with increasing concern.
The National Schools’ Regatta operates under a detailed Safety Plan and follows guidance from British Rowing to ensure the safe delivery of the event for all competitors, coaches, volunteers, officials and spectators. In line with our safety protocols, a full review is required when forecasted sustained winds reach 17mph or greater.
In the 24 hours before Sunday’s scheduled racing, and after consultation with expert meteorologists, we received high-confidence forecasts indicating that wind speeds would exceed 17mph, with gusts up to 40mph. These conditions posed not only a serious risk to those on the water — but also to those on land. High gusts can compromise temporary infrastructure, dislodge boats from racks, and create unsafe conditions for crews, spectators, and volunteers throughout the venue.
This was not a decision made lightly. The Regatta Committee thoroughly explored all options before concluding that cancellation was the only responsible course of action. We fully recognise how incredibly disappointing this news was for every competitor and coach - particularly given the dedication, training, and thoughtful planning that goes into preparing for this regatta over the course of many months.
We hope that all participants, schools, and supporters understand that this decision was made with the safety and well-being of everyone in mind.
We remain enormously proud of the racing that took place on Friday and Saturday, and of the spirit and resilience shown by all involved. Thank you to every competitor, coach, official, sponsor, volunteer and supporter for being part of NSR 2025.
There will be a further statement concerning pre-paid parking for Sunday during next week.
As we continue to improve, we would be most grateful if you could take a few minutes to complete our Spectator Feedback Survey. Your insights are invaluable and help us to understand what we’re doing well and where we can do better.
The National Schools' Regatta Committee would like to extend its sincere thanks to all spectators, families, coaches and supporters for your valued support throughout the year and during this year's event.
The dates for National Schools’ Regatta 2026 are Friday 22nd May to Sunday 24th May
We look forward to welcoming you back to the Regatta in 2026.
Mike Martin
National Schools’ Regatta Chairman
